WET IS THE WORD: Check out the Weather Xtreme video and you can see the guys at HPC are still showing a big rain event for Alabama and the southern U.S. for the next five days; their outlook hints at 5 to 7 inches of rain over Northwest Alabama, tapering off to 2 inches over the southeast corner of the state. We aren’t saying everybody will get this much, but no doubt this will be one of the best mid-summer rain events not involving a tropical system in a long time.
Radar this morning shows a large mass of rain over Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana posted to move into Alabama; looks like we could see 5 to 6 hours of rain today with some embedded thunderstorms. Severe weather should not be a big problem today, although I found it interesting that SPC has very low end tornado probabilities over us today (see the Weather Xtreme video).
Periods of rain and a few thunderstorms are likely tomorrow through Friday, with daytime temperatures well below average. This should be the hottest time of the year for us, but some places might have a hard time getting out of the 70s because of clouds and rain. The “cool” summer of 2009 rolls along.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: The air still looks very moist on Saturday, and we will continue to highlight a chance of showers and storms; the GFS hints that the showers will become more scattered Sunday and Monday as the upper ridge tries to rebuild, but there remains a weakness right over Alabama.
TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin, and no sign of any tropical storm formation through the weekend.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Only about 2 to 4 hours of sun each day through Friday with a good chance of showers and storms each day. The rain won’t be continuous, but a shower will be possible along the coast at just about any time. Highs will be mostly in the mid 80s.
LONG RANGE: The GFS tries to rebuild the heat bubble across the nation’s heartland at mid-August, but we stay fairly moist and it looks like rain will continue to be above average, with temperatures a little below average.
