Cranking this out a little early today… I am speaking to a group here at ABC 33/40 during the lunch hour, and then have to drop by a local school for registration day; you all know that might take longer than you bargain for.
THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT: Within the last few minutes, since I produced the Weather Xtreme video, SPC expanded the slight risk to include all of Alabama for this afternoon and tonight. We are seeing some nice breaks in the overcast over West Alabama and Mississippi, and that will greatly enhance instability values, perhaps reaching 3,000 j/kg this afternoon. Large hail and wet microbursts will be the main threat, but SPC does have low end tornado probabilities in place for West Alabama and Mississippi where some low level helicity will come into play, much like Tuesday.
And, of course, all of the storms that form will be capable of producing very heavy rain in a short amount of time, and a few flash flood warnings could be required at some point along the way.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The overall pattern won’t change much, with only slight height rises by Sunday. Bottom line is that we will continue to mention scattered to numerous showers and storms through Sunday with afternoon highs mostly in the mid 80s, perhaps upper 80s Sunday. Additional rain amounts of 2 to 3 inches are likely through Sunday, with heavier amounts in a few places.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Temperatures will trend upward next week with showers and storms becoming a little more scattered… looks like highs around 90 during the mid-week period with scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. And, the GFS still shows no sign of any really serious heat problems here through mid-August, with the mean ridge over the west, and a mean trough over the east.
TROPICS: Tropical depression 6E in the Pacific is forecast to become a tropical storm in coming days, passing well to the south of the Hawaiian Islands. The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, so tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.
AT THE BEACH: About 3 to 5 hours of sunshine day through the weekend with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 80s.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
