Overnight, Tropical Depression Four formed off the southwest coast of Florida and with little shear and nice warm Gulf water to feed off, it is likely to become a tropical storm later today – to be Claudette. The track will take the storm north-northwest and likely bring wet weather to Alabama Monday and Tuesday with rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches. A Tropical Storm Warning was posted for the Gulf Coast from the Alabama-Florida line to the east to the mouth of the Suwannee River. The warning was posted because of the formation of the depression so close to land and also because of the favorable conditions for intensification.

Behind the future Claudette is Ana and behind Ana is Bill. It would appear that Ana is going to have a tough time in her future. The track of the storm has been adjusted a tad further south which will take the track over the Caribbean Islands giving Ana a tough future. Those mountains in Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Haiti, and Cuba are likely to disrupt Ana enough to weaken it back to a depression. However, the track brings the storm into the Southeast Gulf late Thursday or early Friday putting it in a favorable spot to re-intensify to tropical storm status. And this track will potentially give the Southeast US more rain. Especially since there is a front expected to be moving into the Southeast from the northwest. This combination of a tropical system and a cold front can produce dramatic rainfall events, so it is something we will definitely be watching for.

Bill appears on a track that should take it recurving into the Atlantic with some threat to the mid-Atlantic states and northward – but that is a long way into the future, so we’ll be watching to see what the Atlantic ridge does or doesn’t do with respect to Bill.

For today, look for the development of scattered showers and highs in the range of 89 to 92. Not much sun is expected Monday and Tuesday with excellent rain chances as Claudette moves across the area.

We get a break from Wednesday through Saturday as we return to the daily shower regime. Then next weekend we may be dealing with the effects of Ana depending on her future track plus the weak front. Never a dull moment around here!!

A quick peek into voodoo country indicates a fairly typical late August with no exceptional heat and daily shower possibilities.
