UNSETTLED WEATHER: In the wake of Tropical Storm Claudette, which was pretty much a non-event for Alabama yesterday, an airmass rich in tropical moisture lingers across Alabama this morning, and it looks like we will deal with scattered to numerous showers and storms on a daily basis for the rest of this week.
This morning as I write this, light rain is falling over Northwest Alabama, and a shower will be possible at just about any time through Friday. They will be most numerous during the afternoon and evening hours, but you can’t rule out a late night or morning shower as well. Temperatures will remain below average for August, with highs mostly in the 86 to 90 degree range.
Showers and storms should be most active on Friday, when a rather strong front for this time of the year approaches, supported by a deep upper trough over the eastern U.S. That front should push all the way down into the northern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday morning, and it sure looks like dry air will take over.
OUR WEEKEND: Mostly sunny days, clear cooler nights, and low humidity. Not bad for August… in fact we figure the cooler valleys will reach the 50s at daybreak Sunday, a very nice preview of fall. The dry weather should linger into early next week.
TROPICS: With Ana off the board, thanks to Hispaniola, the only active system is now Hurricane Bill, which is packing sustained winds of 100 mph. The center is about 800 miles east of the Leeward Islands, and it should pass north of the islands this weekend, ultimately turning north. It will be close to Bermuda by Saturday; the official track has Bill passing just west of the island. Then, it recurves harmlessly into the North Atlantic. See the Weather Xtreme video for details. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin is quiet.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will post the show notes on the new episode recorded last night shortly.
