NWS/Birmingham continues a Significant Weather Alert for Sumter, Greene and Pickens Counties in West Alabama until 7:15.

Meanwhile, up in the NW corner of the state, NWS/Huntsville issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for SE Lauderdale County that goes until 7:00 p.m.

The storm, capable of producing penny-size hail and damaging winds over 60, was near Rogersville or about 19 miles west of Athens. The storm essentially stationary and will affect mainly the Rogersville area. Continuous cloud-to-ground lightning was occurring in the storm.

Down in West Alabama, the strongest storms were along the Greene/Pickens County line and the north edge of Sumter County. They were moving toward the NW.

A strong thunderstorm moved up the whole western side of Cullman County, mainly west of I-65 and mostly west of the city of Cullman. That storm is now crossing over into SW Morgan in SE Lawrence County. Mike Wilhelm, 33/40 skywatcher in Vinemont, said the storm produced quite a lightning show as it passed west of his location. Much of Western Cullman County has probably received a good amount of rain today.

Again, later this evening we will post some of today’s rain amounts.

GREATER BIRMINGHAM AREA
No strong storms expected. Lighter showers persist over NW and West Jefferson County, but they are moving away from the Birmingham area.
