SLOW WARM-UP: Scroll down for J.B.’s long list of lows around Alabama this morning. Birmingham’s official low was 57 degrees, which tied the record of the date, last set in 1997. We won’t be quite as cool tonight, but the normally cooler places have chance of visiting the 50s again.
We stay dry through Wednesday with highs back into the 87 to 90 degree range.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: The 12Z GFS hints at an outside risk of a shower Thursday afternoon, and a few scattered showers on Friday as moisture levels increase. Rain amounts should be rather light and spotty, with highs mostly in the upper 80s.
THE WEEKEND: The upper trough over the Eastern U.S. will rebuild over the weekend, driving a cold front down this way. The latest GFS run has this front passing through here late Saturday night or early Sunday, and accordingly we will maintain some risk of scattered showers and storms on Saturday. Then, dry air moves into North Alabama Sunday, setting up another period of very pleasant and dry weather Sunday through Tuesday. Looks like a good chance of lows in the 50s again by Monday and Tuesday very low humidity. This August, relatively speaking, has been amazingly comfortable.
TROPICS: NHC is a little more interested in the disturbance east of the Leeward Islands; some of the dynamic models develop this into a tropical depression within the next 36 hours. It will be moving northwest, and should recurve off the East Coast of the U.S. late this week thanks to the building upper trough, should anything develop there. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
