FEELING MORE LIKE AUGUST: Birmingham is reporting 85 degrees at 2:00… still below average values for late August, but dewpoints are rising into the low to mid 60s, making the warmth feel more like summer. Dewpoints in recent days were well down in the 50s thanks to the dry continental air that was covering the Deep South.
We will be close to 90 tomorrow, but I think the MOS is too warm with low 90s. The day will be dry with a partly sunny sky, and dewpoints will continue to creep up.
THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: We will continue to mention a small risk of a shower Thursday afternoon, with scattered showers a little more likely Friday and Saturday as moisture levels continue to increase. I don’t think it will be a big rain event, with five day rain totals of 1/4 to 1/2 inch for the northern half of the state. Highs will be in the upper 80s on Thursday and Friday, dropping into the mid 80s over the weekend. The chance of a shower at any high football game Friday night is about one in five.
The 12Z GFS brings a surface cold front through North Alabama early Sunday morning, moving it to near Montgomery by midday. I guess we could hold on to some risk of a shower Sunday morning, but it sure looks like the best chance of a few passing showers will come Saturday and Saturday night.
Another surge of cooler and drier air will arrive late in the weekend, and the first part of next week looks rain-free with very comfortable temperatures; we have a chance of reaching the upper 50s early Monday and Tuesday morning.
TROPICS: The disturbance north of the Virgin Islands is in a pretty good position to become Tropical Storm Danny in coming days; it will follow a track very close to that of Hurricane Bill; it should recurve in the Atlantic just off the East Coast of the U.S., and west of Bermuda. Some of the intensity models bring the system up to category one hurricane status before reaching the cooler water of the North Atlantic. It will not impact Alabama in any way. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet at this point.
