SCATTERED SHOWERS: An upper low over the Louisiana coast is helping to pull moist air up into Alabama from the east and south, and we will mention some risk of scattered showers or storms through Saturday. The rain won’t last too long, and it won’t rain everywhere, but just be aware that a passing shower or thunderstorm is possible each day through the beginning of the weekend. The best chance of a shower or storm will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but a late night or morning shower is not out of the question with the ULL involved. Highs will be generally in the mid 80s, and we will also have intervals of sunshine along the way.
COOLER AIR AS SEPTEMBER ARRIVES: A well defined cold front will move through the state Sunday; the 00Z GFS has the front near I-20 by midday Sunday, so we will hang to some risk of a stray shower Sunday morning… then dry and cooler air takes over by Sunday night and the first half of next week. The GFS continues to look more impressive with the push of cooler air; we might stay under 80 degrees both Monday and Tuesday, with morning lows well down in the 50s. I am beginning to think the coldest valleys of North Alabama have a chance of reaching the upper 40s by daybreak Tuesday, right as September begins. Now that will sure feel good. Most of next week looks rain-free with a gradual warming trend past mid-week.
EYE ON DANNY: Tropical Storm Danny remains a little disorganized this morning, packing sustained winds of 60 mph. Looks like the lowest pressure is now closer to the main mass of convection, so it should become a minimal hurricane during the next 24 hours as it moves over the warm Gulf Stream. Not much change in the track; it will sideswipe the New England coast Saturday, passing near or just east of Cape Cod on the journey northeast. Rough surf is likely for the upper half of the Atlantic coast, along with windy and wet conditions. No major damage is expected, however. Danny will wind up in Nova Scotia Sunday.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet; a wave in the East Atlantic south of the Cape Verde Islands shows no sign of organization at this point.
