LABOR DAY WEEKEND: The 12Z models continue the trend of increasing moisture in here tomorrow, so we will go ahead and mention some risk of a shower tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night in our forecast. I don’t think it rains very much, but just be aware some spots could see a passing shower. The high will remain in the mid 80s tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds.
Showers should more numerous on Sunday and Monday as moisture levels continue to increase statewide. Understand we are not talking about a total wash-out, or anything really heavy, but a few showers and possibly a thunderstorm are likely on both of these days. Daytime temperatures will trend downward due to the clouds and showers.
NEXT WEEK: We will need to mention a chance of rain every day next week with a very moist air hanging over Alabama. Hard to determine right now exactly which day will feature the best coverage of showers and storms, but you will need an umbrella just about every day through Friday. Some communities could pick up over one inch of rain during these five days. Severe weather or strong storms are not expected with weak wind fields at the surface and aloft, and marginal instability values.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A legion of high school games tonight. Most of those kick off around 7:00 or 7:30. We cannot guarantee that a few stadiums will not get a shower, mainly in Central Alabama, but most will stay dry with a temperature around 80 at kick off and lowering into the 70s. In college football, Rice will play UAB at Legion Field Saturday afternoon at 3:00. The risk of getting wet is very small with about 86 at kick off and lowering to about 75 at the end of the game. Auburn does not kick off until 6:00 p.m. Saturday when they host Louisiana Tech. Temperature at kick off should be about 82 and 75 at the end of the game. Jacksonville State will be in Atlanta to play Georgia Tech with a noon kick off. Should be mostly dry with low to mid 80s. The outside weather for the Alabama/Virginia Tech game at the Georgia Dome Saturday night should be mostly dry with temperatures in the 70s. The game is inside.
TROPICS: The tropical wave in the Caribbean, formerly known as Erika, looks pretty ill defined this afternoon due to very strong winds aloft over the system. Most of the dynamic models bring this back to life, however, and pull it north through the Atlantic, east of the U.S. mainland. And, a wave in the eastern Atlantic has some potential to become a tropical storm in coming days; we will keep an eye on it. See the Weather Xtreme video for details and graphics on tropical weather.
