RIGHT NOW: Large areas of rain continue moving across Alabama this afternoon. Some spots have received over two inches of rain, including the southern part of Walker County (where a flash flood warning was in effect earlier), and Etowah County near Gadsden. Needless to say, you will need to take the rain gear to high school football games tonight, but it won’t rain everywhere. The chance of any one stadium getting wet tonight is about one in four.
THE WEEKEND: Both the GFS and the NAM hint that tomorrow will be a drier day as the deeper moisture pulls in to a tropical low in the western Gulf of Mexico. It could very well be that much of the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky, but I guess after last Saturday’s bust we aren’t comfortable with a drier solution right now, and we will continue to mention a chance of at least scattered showers and storms during the day.
Showers and storms should be more numerous by Sunday afternoon and Sunday night as the low gets closer, and moisture levels continue to increase.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A lot of high school games tonight. Most of those kick off around 7:00 or 7:30. We estimate there is about a 25-cent chance of any stadium getting a shower and the better chance of that will be during the first half. Temperatures will be in the 70s through most of the game. In college football, UAB hosts SMU at Legion Field at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. The temperature should be around 83 at kick off and drop to the upper 70s for the final whistle. Alabama hosts Florida International for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. At the same time, Auburn will be hosting Mississippi State. The weather for both games should be about the same with temperatures at kick off. The temperature will be 78-80 at kick off and slowly decline into the 70s. There is a chance of a shower or thunderstorm at any time for both games.
NEXT WEEK: The tropical low is forecast to move inland, and hang around Mississippi/Louisiana for much of the week. That should mean a very wet week for Alabama, with occasional showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis through Friday. We might have to deal with some flooding issues before the week is over. We figure total rain amounts during the next 7 days in the 3 to 5 inch range are likely (remember, some places picked up two inches of rain just during the day today!).
TROPICS: A broad low in the western Gulf of Mexico is drifting northward, and should move inland over the upper Texas or Louisiana coast over the weekend. There is some chance this thing becomes a tropical depression, but the net result is the same; it will be a big rain producer for Texas, Louisiana, and ultimately the Deep South. Our friend Fred is hanging around in the East Atlantic around 35W, almost stationary. It is clearly being sheared, and the system is forecast to weaken into a remnant low over the weekend. But, as a ridge builds north of the system, it will be forced westward, so we will need to keep an eye on it. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for full details.
