An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

The weak frontal boundary sitting just north of Alabama appears poised to sag into the state and then wash out. Hard to get a front with any significance into Alabama in the summertime. I think the front will sag into the area and wash out. About the only evidence that a front is anywhere nearby will be somewhat greater coverage in showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall amounts will still be spotty with good rains under the heaviest showers but those good rains don’t cover much territory.

Those storms yesterday were quite mean. These rapidly developing storms in the heat of the afternoon are really tough to warn for because by the time it looks like the storm could be severe, it has probably already done the damage. And the events associated with these storms are short-lived and very isolated.

Spotty showers, even with greater areal coverage, will not break our drought, but they will certainly help to ease the present dryness we’re experiencing. And where the showers occur, grass will perk up and some small ponds will respond with higher levels. I don’t think there is much chance that the showers will do more than ease the dry conditions for some. In the long term, we still need to see some sort of continuous rain event to really help out.

Looks like there won’t be much relief from the heat either. The GFS MOS continues to be too low as it seems to trend back toward climatology. I think afternoon highs will stay in the 90s for the foreseeable future.

Not much change in our weather situation for the next week or so. The GFS is advertising another front late next week, but I’m just not buying into that yet. Sure, I’d really like to see that kind of pattern develop, but fronts are something we just don’t see in the summertime in Central Alabama. I’ll keep my eye on the GFS output, but just like the one we’re dealing with now, I just don’t quite see it happening.

I appreciate you tuning in to the Weather Xtreme Video. I arrived at Mt. Cheaha in the middle of a big thunderstorm with some tremendous lightning. Be mindful of the dangers of lightning. I sat in my car for about 20 minutes until the storm died out some and lightning was no longer a threat. I should have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 9 am Sunday morning. Have a great Saturday. God bless.
