For some reason, in the middle of all of this flooding and active weather, the Earth Wind and Fire song just popped in my mind:
“Do you remember the 21st night of september?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away”
Maybe my brain is getting waterlogged….
RIGHT NOW: Scroll down for the latest; flash flood warnings are in effect for about a dozen Alabama counties. And, on top of that, a tornado warning is in effect for Sumter County in extreme West Alabama for a rotating thunderstorm near Boyd. When it rains, it pours, you know.
Seems like the severe storm is on a boundary between rain cooled air to the north and warmer air to the south; that boundary is responsible for backing surface winds and potential for rotating updrafts. SPC has put out a mesoscale discussion, and they don’t expect any widespread severe weather, but we we all will have to watch for storms that fire along that boundary over West-Central Alabama in coming hours.
TONIGHT AND TOMORROW: Occasional showers and storms will continue through tomorrow, and flash flooding will remain a possibility. You know the deal; turn around, and don’t drown. We have had loss of life this morning due to flooding in the Atlanta metro area, and we sure hope we don’t have to report that here in Alabama tonight or tomorrow. There will be breaks in the rain, but when the rain comes, it could be heavy in this pure tropical air, brought up into the Deep South about 10 days by a tropical low that moved inland from the western Gulf of Mexico. Never got a name, but we will sure remember this event.
WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: As a closer upper low drifts northward over the western High Plains, an upper ridge will build over Alabama, and these three days should be drier. Not totally rain-free, but the showers and storms that form should be fewer in number, and more scattered. Also, the weather will be very warm for the first few days of autumn (the autumnal equinox is tomorrow at 4:18 p.m.), with highs in the mid 80s, perhaps reaching the upper 80s in spots. The weather will be very humid, and it certainly won’t feel like fall.
WEEKEND PEEK: Unfortunately, it looks like showers and storms will increase again Saturday as a short wave beats down the upper ridge. The 12Z GFS hints at drier air Sunday.
Have to cut this short due to tornado warning for Greene County…
