An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

SHOWERS STARTING EARLY: Radar showers developing showers and thunderstorms over scattered pockets of Alabama this morning, and once again we will deal with scattered to numerous showers and storms through the day. Due to the tropical nature of the airmass over Alabama, some heavy rain is possible, and the NWS maintains a flash flood watch for most of the state through tonight. Additional rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely, with some spots possibly getting more. You know the story.

ON THE MAPS: A strong upper trough over the nation’s mid-section will cut off today, and the upper low will be centered near the Colorado/Kansas border. That should mean the most concentrated axis of showers and storms will be roughly from Brownsville, Texas to Memphis tomorrow and Thursday. Understand there is no doubt we will have a few showers and storms around here as well, but they will be fewer in number compared to recent days as an upper ridge builds over the Deep South ahead of the upper low. The weather will also be unseasonably warm for the first few days of the fall season, with highs in the mid to upper 80s with a mix of sun and clouds. Pretty much the same story Friday, although the upper low will begin to open up as a short wave and head east.

THE WEEKEND: Showers and storms should become more numerous on Saturday as the short wave passes just north of Alabama, and it could be another day with the threat of heavy rain. Then, finally on Sunday, drier air begins to move into North Alabama, and by midday it could very well be that the most numerous showers and storms will be down over the southern half of the state.

NEXT WEEK: We will be bold and daring and forecast completely rain-free weather on Monday and Tuesday, giving our waterlogged state a chance to dry out. And, the 00Z GFS is hinting that we might even see a little Canadian air by Tuesday, dropping highs into the 70s, and lows into the 50s. Sure sounds nice.

VOODOO LAND: Still no sign of any really good push of Polar air down into Alabama that would get us into the 40s through early October, but that front will come at some point. The good news is that the weather definitely looks drier for most of next week.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin this morning.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. Busy day ahead for me… I will be doing a weather program this morning Brighton Middle School, followed by being a participant in a pie throwing contest at Trinity Medical Center (yep, they will be lined up throwing pies at ME) as a kickoff to their United Way campaign, and then a talk early this afternoon at Episcopal Place in Birmingham (hopefully they will excuse all of the pie on my clothing when I show up). The next Weather Xtreme video should be posted by 3:30 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
