Just looking at our rainfall surpluses this morning across Alabama. Birmingham is the big winner at the official reporting stations with an excess of 11.98 inches over the average annual rainfall so far. In fact, we have surpassed the total that we normally receive in a year. Some of the surpluses:
Muscle Shoals: +3.65 inches
Huntsville: +8.11 inches
Anniston: +7.23 inches
Montgomery: +0.30 inches
Tuscaloosa: +3.94 inches
Mobile is nearly average, with a deficit of 0.64 inches.
Skies are overcast this morning across the area, with a ceiling generally around 1500-2500 feet. That ceiling was a little lower in some spots, like at the Birmingham Airport, where it is down to 400 feet. Visibility are generally good, except in places where you are in t he clouds, like Mt. Cheaha, where it is socked in on the Skycam this morning. Skies do seem to be lightening, especially over western and northern Alabama, and I think this bodes well for some sunshine later on.
A few Sunday morning forecast notes:
…A nice day today, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 70s.
…It becomes cloudy tonight with a good chance of showers as a warm front comes north and disturbances start swinging by overhead. Look for one half to three quarters of an inch of rain on average by morning. 58F for the overnight low.
…Dewpoints creep back up into the middle 60s tomorrow, making it feel humid again. Look for nearly a 100% chance of rain. It won’t rain all day, but nearly everyone will get wet. An inch of rain on average tomorrow. Average high: 71F.
…Tuesday features a chance of a shower or storm. It will be even a little more humid. Then a batch of rain and storms comes in at some point later in the day or into the overnight. Another inch of rain or more possible. Highs will be in the 70s.
…A front could get south of us on Wednesday, giving us a short break from the showers. We will have to watch that possibility.
…A strong low swings by to our north on Thursday, giving us good chances of showers and storms, with the possibility of strong to severe storms late Thursday into early Friday.
…Blustery on Friday with a biting northwest wind, cloudy skies and a little light rain. Temperatures will hold steady and start slowly falling from the morning lows in the lower 60s.
…Cooler and drier air will follow for the weekend.
