WET IS THE WORD: Periods of rain will continue across Alabama today. It will be a cool rain; temperatures will hover around 60 degrees much of the day, and that means no surface based instability and no significant threat of severe weather. Rain amounts of 1/2 inch look likely now, and the rain will end tonight as the upper trough moves to the east.
We get a nice break from the rain tomorrow, with a partly sunny sky and a warmer afternoon; the high should be in the low 70s. But, while we enjoy the quiet weather, a very deep, cold upper trough will deepen out west with snow for the Rocky Mountains, and the threat of severe storms for Texas.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The big trough out west will move slowly in our direction. Severe weather is likely to the west of Alabama Thursday and Friday, along with the threat of heavy rain and flooding. Here at home, a few scattered showers and storms are possible during the day Thursday and Friday, but it continues to look like the main band of organized storms will move through Friday night. While the upper support will slowly weaken and lift north of Alabama, it still appears will have a risk of a QLCS with potential for damaging winds Friday night, generally in the time frame from 5:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Again, we will probably need to adjust the timing as we get closer to the event, so stay tuned. The end of the week system has the potential to bring one inch of rain to the state; maybe a little more in spots.
We note the GFS MOS seems a little too warm as it continues to print low 80s Thursday and Friday… mid 70s seems a little more realistic, although if the sun breaks out for a while a few spots might approach 80.
HALLOWEEN WEEKEND: The rain should end during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, and the weekend still looks good. The sky becomes partly sunny Saturday with a high close to 70, and Sunday promises to be a bright sunny day with a high in the low to mid 70s. Great weather for trick or treating, and for NASCAR fans coming in for race weekend at Talladega.
NEXT WEEK: For now Monday and Tuesday look dry and pleasant… the next rain producer is due in here toward the end of the week. No sign of any freezing temperatures for the next 15 days.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.
I will be in Cullman this morning speaking to the kids at Cullman East Elementary… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
