WILD WEATHER DAY: What a weather day. The warm sector surged northward this morning, reaching the Tennessee Valley this afternoon as a surface low deepens over Tennessee near Nashville. The trailing cold front is producing a line of showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm, from near Huntsville down to Oneonta as I write this. These showers have the potential to produce strong winds and maybe even some small hail; they will be into Georgia by 3:30 to 4:00. A mid level dry slot produced some sunshine across the state during the midday hours, pushing temperatures well into the 60s. Montgomery had reached 70 degrees at 1:00.
On top of everything else, it looked like a gravity wave produced some tree and power line damage this morning over the eastern part of the Tennessee Valley. And, to the east, a number of counties in South Georgia are under tornado warnings.
TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY: Clouds will wrap back into the state tonight, and tomorrow will be a mostly cloudy and colder day with a high in the mid to upper 40s. Not much change on Friday; lots of clouds with a high somewhere in the 45 to 49 degree range.
WHAT ABOUT THAT SNOW? Be sure and watch the Weather Xtreme video for a detailed look at the situation for late Friday night and Saturday morning. A strong lobe rotating through the upper trough over the eastern half of the nation is forecast to spin up yet another surface wave in the Gulf of Mexico. This will bring rain to far South Alabama, and some light snow or snow flurries to the rest of the state.
The main window for snow flakes will come from about 12:00 midnight Friday night through 10:00 a.m. Saturday. The deeper moisture will remain to the south, so we are mainly talking flurries. But, some spots could see a dusting, maybe even 1 inch, especially over East Alabama. Even if that happens, we don’t expect any travel problems since surface temperatures should be a little above freezing, and the soil temps are relatively warm.
We will fine tune the forecast as the event gets closer. Should be a very interesting way to begin the weekend.
THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: The sky will clear Saturday afternoon, but the day will be cold with a high in the low to mid 40s. We will drop into the 28 to 32 degree range early Sunday, then rise into the upper 40s Sunday afternoon with a sunny sky.
NEXT WEEK: Some hint of a little light rain Monday and Tuesday, followed by another significant rain event Tuesday night or Wednesday. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for details.
