TODAY/TOMORROW: Moist air covers all of Alabama this morning, and in advance of a northward moving warm front over extreme South Alabama, dense fog is the issue as we begin this day. Visibility is very restricted, so you might consider taking some extra time to get to work this morning. Temperatures are mostly in the 50s, and we will rise into the 60s today. Clouds will linger through the day, and some drizzle is likely this morning, followed by a few showers this afternoon.
Rain will be more widespread tonight as a cold front enters the state. This time we don’t expect any big problems with severe weather; SPC has only low end probabilities (5 percent) near the Gulf Coast, and nothing up this way. The GFS is printing only 0.17″ for Birmingham, while the NAM is similar with 0.23″. No doubt the heaviest rain will be over the southern half of the state, where the NWS in Mobile has a flash flood watch in effect for their CWA (county warning area).
Rain will end early tomorrow, and temperatures could very well fall during the day. We will be in the 57 to 60 degree range at daybreak tomorrow, but should be closer to 50 by late afternoon as cold air advection continues. A freezing start is possible on Wednesday.
REST OF THE WEEK: Dry and cool weather is the story for Wednesday and Thursday with cold mornings but relatively comfortable afternoons. A cold front will blow through Thursday night and early Friday; for now we won’t mention any significant chance of rain with this feature, then colder air blows in Friday night. The GFS suggests most of the rain Friday will be over far Southeast Alabama, around Dothan.
OUR WEEKEND: Dry and cold weather is likely Saturday and Sunday with highs in the 40s and lows in the 27 to 31 degree range. We expect a decent amount of sunshine both days.
CHRISTMAS WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics… for now it looks like a pre-Christmas storm system shows up by the middle of next week with a chance of a cold rain, and maybe a few snow flakes on the northern edge of the precipitation over far North Alabama and southern Tennessee. Then, cold and dry weather for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Of course, confidence in any specific solution is low in this pattern.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record this week’s episode tonight; it will be posted by 11:00 p.m. CST.
I am off to Fayette this morning to speak to the kids at Fayette Head Start; I will be back by early afternoon and the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so. Enjoy the day!
