Scroll down for Bill’s thorough briefing. I am adding a few miscellaneous disconnected notes:

* Big strong high pressure area centered over South Canada about 200 miles northof the USA border has intensified to a central pressure of 1047 MB. That is getting pretty strong. When I see highs building to 1050 or greater in that part of the world, I get anxious (semi-nervous) Those big highs can act like a bully and force-feed very low temperatures into the USA including our neck of the woods. Temperatures are plenty cold in the far north country.

* at 1 am Alabama time it was 48 below zero in Canada at Isachsen, Nunavut.

* Light rain much of Mississippi and Louisiana this morning spreading into Alabama. Nearest freezing temperatures to Alabama were over Extreme NW Tennessee and North Arkansas. In the 40s most of Mississippi and Alabama.

* 26 below zero at good ole Deadhorse, Alaska at this hour with a wind chill 52 below,

* Over the North Pole and into Siberia, at Ojmjakon, it was 55 below zero with the pressure close to 31 inches. That (town) (city) bills itself as the world’s coldest place that is inhabited year-round. Their forecast calls for a low of 63 below by Wednesday night.

My first official act in this brand new decade is to hit the sack for a four-hour super power nap.

Happy New Year, lets all try to be happier in 2010 despite the weather that is thrown at us! I am happy, Little Miss Molly is happy but in hiding at the moment because of fireworks.

I am unhappily hungary, One of my New Year’s resolutions is to be less silly and not so light-hearted. I want to become an old semi-grouch. There are so many of them around.
