TODAY: I guess I will grade today’s forecast as a “D”… the idea of the best moisture being south of Birmingham was excellent, but a warm tongue in the 2,000 to 4,000 foot range was responsible for mostly rain in that region, ending the chance of a great snow placement forecast. But, for North Alabama there was snow and the kids had a ton of fun. See these pictures:

I would love to see Dr. Tim do a study of the atmosphere below 850 mb today; what a mess. But, onward we do…

COLD BLAST AHEAD: Arctic air invades Alabama tonight, so be aware that any moisture on the bridges/roads will be ice. I don’t think there will be widespread travel problems, but some icing issues are very likely in scattered pockets. Let’s be careful out there going to BCS Championship parties.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY/SUNDAY: We will forecast highs in the 27 to 30 degree range both days, with lows in the 10 to 15 degree range. The wind chill index will be in the single digits most of the time, and a few scattered snow flurries are possible. I get the idea Sunday morning will be the coldest morning, when some of the colder pockets across North Alabama should reach the 5 to 9 degree range. We finally warm into the mid 30s Sunday afternoon as the climb out of the deep freeze begins.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS is suggesting the first half of the week will be dry. And, that particular run suppresses the big storm at the end of next week well to the south, but I have to figure that one could very well bring us a good soaking around January 15. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
