One again after a review of the 12Z model set we don’t see any compelling reason to change our forecast for the next few days. Mostly a big rain event for Alabama, with lots of snow and ice over Tennessee.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: We will drop into the mid 30s by daybreak tomorrow with a generally cloudy sky. Looks like much of the day tomorrow will be dry, with rain breaking out by late afternoon, then becoming widespread tomorrow night. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with some thunder possible near the Gulf coast. We note the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for much of North-Central Alabama since the ground is still relatively saturated.

Generally speaking, the thermal values on the morning runs are warmer, and it still looks like we will remain above freezing through Saturday morning, so even if we see a few snow flakes or ice pellets here Saturday morning, there will be no travel issues for Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston.

The Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama remains right on the border of a potential ice storm, and just a cold rain. There could very well be some icy spots on bridges up around Huntsville and Muscle Shoals late tomorrow night and Saturday morning, so be careful. But, the biggest ice issues, most likely, will remain over Tennessee.

SATURDAY: The day will be much colder. The models believe we will make it up into the low 40s, but I suggest we will have a very hard time getting out of the 30s with the ice and snow pack to the north. Wind chill index values will remain below freezing much of the day, and we will maintain the chance of morning snow flurries.

SUNDAY: We begin the day in the low 20s, with upper teens possible for the colder valleys of North Alabama. Then, with a sunny sky we will warm into the upper 40s by Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: Still looks like some light rain possible on Tuesday, with a bigger rain event toward the end of the week. The 12Z GFS shows that system in here on Thursday; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
