Big chunk of Alabama getting a break from rain very early on this Christmas morning.
Off to the west, heavy rain in a broad zone from Memphis to Little Rock. The reason is a major low pressure area that moved NE out of our old friend, the Gulf of Mexico.
That low was centered over East Central Mississippi near Meridian. One of the lowest pressures was 29.57 inches at Key Field, Meridian.
A sampling of rainfall amounts so far and this list may not include some of the heavier amounts. A more complete list later this morning.
0.71 in North Auburn
0.48 at Logan Martin Dam
0.52 at Childersburg
0.59 at Clanton
0.66 at Carbon Hill
0.62 at Haleyville
0.71 at Holt Dam (east edge of Tuscaloosa)
It is windy, especially on the ridges and mainly because of the low pressure area over east Mississippi. Two examples:
35 mph gusts at the Skycam site, downtown Birmingham, atop the Daniel Bldg.
29 mph sustained atop Mt. Cheaha but with gusts to 44 mph out of the east.
46 mph gust at Black Creek (on Lookout Mountain, NE Etowah County)
BACK DRIVING THE MULE AND WAGON
Sure enjoyed my week’s vacation. Thanks to James Spann for covering. Back on duty this morning but what a time to get semi-sick. A recliner-shaking chill early this morning and I actually put on a long-sleeved shirt. Also a raspy and semi-sore throat. Treating it with an over-dose of fresh coffee. This ailment will not affect my weather work because I will be doing all that from home, including radio broadcasts.
Merry Christmas to all. There is simply no other like it, in my opinion.
Little Miss Molly has experienced a stressfull week. I will write about that later. She is not used to so much in-house company + another dog!
