Nearby supermarket doing a very brisk business. I definitely was not there because of the weather.

Thick clouds cover the state and radar shows that precipitation is trying to occur over nearly the NW half just before 5:00 p.m. Only thing, lots of that is not touching the ground.

We have had a number of reports of light sleet in the last few hours from places like Montevallo, Sylacauga, Linden, Greystone and the Tuscaloosa area. Our most recent report was from Taylorville just wouth of Tuscaloosa just before 5:00 p.m.

We also had one report of freezing rain in East Alabama earlier. I don’t want to doubt the report, but temperatures are in the 40s in that area. We hope no one is getting confused at the difference between sleet and freezing rain. You will know it is sleet when the little ice pellets bounce around on your patio, roof or car tops after hitting the surface. Freezing rain is regular old rain, except that it freezes soon after making impact and clings to everything like glue.

It also builds up weight and, if there is enough of it, it will bring down trees and utility lines. It only takes a small amount of freezing rain to make you skid on bridges and overpasses.

Mostly tonight we expect a mixture of light rain and light sleet, but as the temperature gets closer to freezing near daybreak, there could be some brief intervals of freezing rain.

We will be hanging out with you all night, so check this blog frequently.
