Some of the new 12Z guidance is in the house, and it really doesn’t show any real change in the situation for tonight.
You can read the morning discussion for the “long story”… but again here is the summary:
*There is a chance of a wintry mix of precipitation over North Alabama late tonight and early tomorrow. Mainly from 10:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.
*The primary issue will be bridge icing, mainly north of a line from Millport to Fayette to Birmingham to Ashland and to Roanoke. The precipitation along and about 50 miles north of that line will be mainly freezing rain (rain that falls when the surface temperature is 32 or below), and sleet (ice pellets). It is a very close call for the Birmingham metro; we might have some bridge icing with 31 degrees at Gardendale, but a cold rain with 33 degrees at Hoover.
*Some snow could be involved, mainly north of a line from around Athens to Guntersville to Centre. Accumulation of around one inch is possible, with 2 inches or so possible for the far northeast tip of the state, mainly Jackson and DeKalb counties.
*I have some concern over heavier ice accumulation some parts of Northeast Alabama, but generally speaking we don’t expect enough ice to create any major power outages.
*This is a short term problem as we should warm into the mid 30s by mid-morning, and to near 40 by afternoon.
*Just for fun…. the 12Z NAM is trying to put the weekend storm back on the table for Central Alabama.
