COLD: Our SKYCAM in downtown Birmingham, atop the Daniel Building on 20th Street, shows only 34 degrees as I write this at 2:30 p.m. Looks like most folks will not see 40 again today. There were a few snow flurries across the northern half of the state this morning, but they were light and spotty. Tonight will be one of the coldest nights of the season as we head down toward the 18 to 22 degree range. The wind will not be going calm, so the bottom won’t drop out. But, of course, the wind makes it feel colder.
Tomorrow will be yet another cold and dry day with a high around 40 degrees for most spots.
THE WEEKEND: A very strong impulse will rotate through the base of the Arctic upper trough over the eastern half of the nation, but the moisture is very limited. We will continue to mention the chance of light snow, or snow flurries for the northern part of the state late Saturday and Saturday night. The best chance of any accumulation will be over the northeast part of the state, especially over Jackson and DeKalb counties. A dusting is possible as far south as I-20, and the best chance of the light snow will be from about 6:00 p.m. Saturday until 6:00 a.m. Sunday. These “Clippers” can sometimes be surprising, we will be watching closely for the radar trends as we get into the weekend.
NEXT WEEK: The upper air pattern will deamplify next week, meaning a warming trend for much of the nation, thankfully. The 12Z GFS shows a different solution with the mid-week short wave, taking it on a southerly track with most of the rain and storms over the southern half of the state. No need to buy into anything this early in the game; we will continue to mention a chance of rain and storms statewide on Wednesday.
Sorry to make this so short today, but we are on the road to Jasper for Storm Alert 2007, which will be tonight at 7:00 at the CHS Community Services building downtown.
