We, who live in the Deep South, are blessed in many ways. Even though our summers are hot, humid and long and even though we do not get enough snow in the wintertime to please the youngsters (and a bunch of adults!), I think we are better off than what people in the Midwest and NE are having to go through with now.
The major winter storm over the last two days has been of historic proportions. Extremely heavy snow has covered many states. The storm dumped a total of 42 inches at Stratford in Fulton County, New York and 40 inches at St. Johnsville, Vermont.
Yesterday and again today, on at least one interstate highway in Eastern Pennsylvania, there was an unbelievable sight. Bumper to bumper cars and trucks were stalled as far as the eye could see. One report said the traffic jam was 50 miles long. This not only was a real crisis for the people in the vehicles, because the temperature dropped as low as 10 during the night, but they also ran out of food in their cars and had no way to get to sanitary facilities.
Snowplows were paralyzed. They could not plow the highways because of the stalled cars.
I do not know about you, but I do not care for that. I do have just enough child in me to enjoy maybe one snow each winter, but my choice would be a one-time storm of 4 inches or less. I love the cold weather, but I do not want very much snow.
I sure feel for all those people, not to mention the thousands of people that were stranded because of grounded airliners.
