In Mississippi, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Lee County for a thunderstorm just north of Tupelo that shows the potential for hail approaching the size of softballs.
This storm could clip extreme NW Alabama in an hour or so.
A severe thunderstorm watch continues for three NW Alabama counties until 8 a.m.
No official reports of large hail in the past hour in NE Mississippi.
Closer to home, thunderstorms are less organized along a warm front, but scattered storms are over eastern sections of the state, as well as Northwest parts of Alabama.
But in the past little while, storms have developed and are intensifying over West Alabama’s Bibb, Tuscaloosa and Pickens Counties back into Noxubee County, Mississippi. We will have to watch these storms as they have the potential to produce large hail eventually and could even beome severe.
These storms are in the developing warm sector behind a warm front. Dewpoints have jumped over the past several hours to 45F at Birmingham, 46F at Calera and 47F at Tuscaloosa. The dewpoint at Columbus MS is up to 50F. This means the airmass over the South is moistening quickly.
Virtually the entire state is under a HIGH RISK outllook for severe weather today according to the Storm Prediction Center.
