ANOTHER NICE DAY: Not much change in the weather today; a partly sunny sky with temperatures reaching the mid 70s this afternoon. I sure don’t hear too many complaints about this weather.
To the west, an upper trough is brining a few showers to the general area from Minnesota to East Texas, and that feature will bring increasing clouds to Alabama tonight, and the chance of a few scattered showers tomorrow. The guys at HPC on their QPF graphic (see the video) are suggesting rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches here during the next five days, but I sure don’t buy that. I think rain tomorrow will be light and spotty with limited low level moisture and the lack of good upper air support. Bottom line is that we will have to dodge a few showers tomorrow, but I just don’t think it rains all that much.
Then, that wave moves on to the east and we should be dry and mild Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with highs in the low 70s each day. To the west, an upper low will form over Texas and move only slowly in our direction. The latest GFS is weaker with that system, and keeps all of the rain west of here through Wednesday. For now, we will continue to mention a chance of showers on Wednesday, but if the 06Z solution is correct we will have back down on that. Finally the upper low opens up into a weakening short wave and brings showers in here Wednesday night and Thursday.
To the north, the northern branch becomes active and a cold, long wave upper trough forms at the end of next week (one week from today). That will drive a cold front through here Thursday night with a chance of showers, and then we will have a temporary shot of colder air Friday through Sunday (St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 16-18). We will probably have one or two mornings here with temperatures below freezing.
LONG RANGE: After St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the weather warms up again, and the rest of March looks rather benign with mild temperatures and no major severe weather threat.
