Looks like we won’t have much to gripe about when it comes to the weather, so we can focus all of our griping energy on the changeover to Daylight Savings Time!!! Yup, the changeover comes tonight at 2 am when everyone should get up and set those clocks ahead one hour – Spring Forward!! Okay, okay, be lazy and do it tonight before you go to bed – just don’t participate in the spirit of the time change and wander around the house at that hour setting clocks. As for me, I’m going to gripe for at least a month or two about converting Zulu time or GMT time to Central Daylight Time because it will take me that long to get it right. Enough!!
Weather looks great – have a nice weekend. I could really stop there, but I won’t. A weak upper short wave is moving through the Southeast this morning with a few clouds along with a couple of echoes on radar. The main echoes are southwest of the Birmingham area. I think we’ll remain dry with very few spots getting any rain. And it is also mild with temperatures this morning in the lower 50s for the most part. We should see temperatures climb to around 70 degrees, so it will be a very nice Saturday. This is the kind of Saturday that makes me want to get outside and do yard work – NOT!!
The front moving through the area today will have little impact on our weather as it washes out. So we will peek back to the west and begin watching the next weather system which is expected to impact us on Wednesday according to the latest GFS model run, the 06Z one. The upper closed low/short wave moves slowly our way with the bulk of the weather held back to the west. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked a large portion of Texas for a slight risk of severe weather on Sunday and early Monday. This system should not be strong enough to impact Central Alabama with any serious weather. And it appears that we will remain dry until Wednesday.
Once that system goes by, the trough over the eastern half of the US sharpens up. Unlike the model run James presented yesterday, the latest solution brings the cold air slightly further east. Sure, we’re going to see a bit of a cool down, but it now looks like the cool down won’t be quite as strong.
The GFS suggests that the Gulf of Mexico will open up late Sunday, March 18th, but I think it is overdoing the extent of rain. But that is a long way out to be too specific just yet.
In voodoo land, the GFS keeps us in relatively good weather as the main westerlies are along the northern tier of the US. But the GFS is now suggesting a big change with a strong system moving through the Central US around March 23rd. This may bring another round of severe weather based on the strength shown, but that is nearly two weeks out. Plenty of time to watch the evolution of the forecasts.
