I must admit going into the day I was very skeptical that we would see more than one-half inch of rain with this event. But, at least for the Birmingham metro, we are quickly headed for one inch as I write this. A cluster of heavy showers has pushed the rain total at our SKYCAM site in downtown Birmingham up to 0.73″, while we have 0.71″ at our weather office in Riverchase, not too far from the Galleria.
Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm will continue through tonight in advance of a cold front that will push through here tomorrow morning. Looks like the models are trying to hold on to some risk of a shower during the morning hours tomorrow, but any lingering showers will be ending from west to east during the midday hours as colder and drier air moves in from the north. And, once again, the models are trending cooler. Looks like we might not make it out of the mid 50s tomorrow with a cool north breeze and clouds lingering through the early afternoon. The sky will clear by mid to late afternoon.
THE WEEKEND: Mostly clear and cool weather is the story for the weekend. The NAM now prints a low of 31 degrees for Birmingham early Saturday, while the GFS shows 34. Sure looks like many spots will have a light freeze Saturday morning, and Sunday morning should be just as cold. The high on both days will be very close to 60 degrees, about five degrees below normal for mid-March in Alabama.
NEXT WEEK: Looks like dry and mild weather for Alabama for the first half of next week with highs in the 70s. To the west, a deep upper trough will form over the Southwest U.S., but it looks like it might be the end of the week before that system brings rain to Alabama. At the moment the weather looks wet here by Friday March 23 and Saturday March 24.

I sure enjoyed my trip to Reform today; I spoke at Pickens County High School late this morning, and the students there were a great audience. I drove through lots of rain on the way back… but a good rain that we really need. I will have the next Weather Xtreme video posted by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow!
