The ole “wedge” effect will bring cooler air into Alabama from the east today. We note that our SKYCAM site atop Mt. Cheaha is showing only 51 degrees as I write this; up on the big mountain south of Anniston (the elevation is 2,407 feet) they might have a hard time getting out of the 50s today. For most spots, however, we are projecting a high somewhere between 70 and 75, which is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. There could be a few cloudy periods today, but for now we are not expecting any rain. The warmer readings will be over West Alabama, with the coolest temperatures near the Georgia border.
TO THE WEST: More severe storms will likely fire up today from Texas northward through the Plains as the upper trough over the Rocky Mountain states begins to move to the east. Those storms will get closer to Alabama tomorrow (we remain dry tomorrow), and SPC has defined a slight risk of severe weather as far east as Mississippi. However, the wind fields will weaken by the time the band of showers and storms moves into Alabama Sunday, and we don’t expect a major severe weather risk. Rainfall amounts of 1/2 inch are likely on Sunday across the northern half of the state.
NEXT WEEK: Showers on Monday should be generally confined to the southern half of the state, but showers and storms will increase again statewide by Tuesday night and Wednesday with another cold front approaching from the north. The GFS continues to advertise a healthy batch of cooler air moving into the Deep South following that rain; even some hint of the chance of scattered frost for parts of North Alabama in the April 7-8 time frame during the early morning hours.
