Of course, all eyes are on the official reading at the Birmingham Airport. If the mercury there drops to 25 or lower tonight, it will establish a new all time April record.
At 10 p.m., it was 38F at the Airport, which is a few degrees above the temperature curve I had forecast. This is because the winds have remained up, running 5-7 mph out of the NW. There has also been a thin canopy of clouds spreading across the Central part of the state. These two factors could help keep us warmer than expected overnight.
It was 37F at Calera, but with mostly cloudy skies. It was already 28F at Gadsden and 30F in Anniston. It was 37F in Tuscaloosa, with cloudy skies.
The winds should diminish shortly, but the clouds may help arrest the temperature drop. Hopefully it will not be too late for our vulnerable orchards down in Chilton County. Our skycam in Clanton shows 37F.
A personal weather station in Jemison recently reported 35F.
We are calling for lows between 20-28 across the northern and Central part of the state with an average around 24. The colder readings may be across eastern sections now. The clouds at Calera are a promising development for Chilton County.
A freeze warning is in effect for Sunday night. Temperatures are expected to drop to near or just below 32F.
Be aware that there is a red flag warning for tomorrow also. Red flag warning means that conditions are favorable for wildfires to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning must be avoided.
Lots of moisture is lurking to the south over southeastern Louisiana. The NWS Mobile warns that sleet will be commonplace during the early morning hours, perhaps even into the afternoon. A variety of snow advisories, winter storm watches and warnings cover much of Central Texas. An inch of snow has fallen in the Lufkin/Nocogdoches. Light accumulations are occurring into Central Louisiana around Alexandria where a winter weather advisory is in effect. Unprecedented wintry precip is expected even into the Lake Charles area.
Four inches of snow was reported northwest of Copperas Cover in Coryell County, Texas, in the Fort Worth area of responsibility. Two to three inches of snow was reported in SW Texas.
We could see a few flurries or a little light sleet tomorrow night.
