The new Severe Weather Outlook for today (Saturday) changed very little from the earlier outlook.
A Moderate Risk is in effect today for:
Southeast Mississippi
South half of Alabama
Northwest Florida
Part of Southwest Georgia
Here in Alabama, the moderate risk includes the area from about Clanton southward. We can’t be too precise describing that line because the situation may change somewhat as the event unfolds later today.
The rest of Alabama is under a slight risk, except possibly a small strip near the Tennessee border. The slight risk includes such cities as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden Talladega, just to name a few.
A warm front will be pushing northward today bringing higher dew points (richer moisture) At 4 o’clock this morning, the air was very stable across Alabama with dew points only in the 30s over the north and 40s downstate. Deeper moisture has pushed onshore with dew points in the 60s in the Pensacola-Mobile-Biloxi areas.
It is also relatively cool in Alabama with temperatures in the 50s over most of the state. That will change as the warm front moves northward.
Temperatures are in the mid 70s in the warm sector over South Louisiana.
Scattered storms may develop this morning as the warm front presses northward. A few of those could become severe. However, later today, as the low pressure area gets closer, a line of thunderstorms, some strong to severe, will advance eastward across the state. For Central Alabama, including Birmingham, this may be afternoon.
But we will watch it closely all day.
At 4 this morning, a long line of thunderstorms extended across North and NW Mississippi down across Louisiana into SE Texas. A Tornado Watch was already in efdfect for much of North and Central Louisiana.
