No change in our thinking since this morning… no rain for Alabama through early next week. Our forecast will consist of mostly sunny, mild days and clear cool nights through the weekend with highs mostly in the 70s and lows in the 40s. Weather like this makes our job pretty simple.
NEXT WEEK: Any showers early next week should remain north of Alabama, and at this time we don’t expect any significant rain Monday through Wednesday. I get the idea will be in the low 80s each afternoon on those three days with humidity levels creeping upward. Finally, rain returns at the end of the week on Thursday into Friday. The latest run (12Z) of the GFS is actually a bit slower, holding off the rain until Thursday night, but timing is almost impossible this far in advance. The 12Z GFS shows a good chance of periods of rain and thunderstorms from Thursday night into Saturday (April 26-28), with the rain ending from west to east during the day Saturday. Then, Sunday (April 29) looks dry with comfortable temperatures. This solution is very similar to the 00Z run from last night.
ONE YEAR AGO: What an incredible severe weather event across North Alabama one year ago… Central Alabama was in a stormy period. Birmingham got a whopping 5.51 inches of rain in only 3 days. A year ago today, the temperature topped out at a hot 91, then big thunderstorms erupted. A lot of severe thunderstorm warnings were issued. Oneonta got a tremendous hailstorm with some of the hail the size of softballs. In places, the hail drifted enough to where front doors could not be opened and the hail had to be scooped away.
