This is the 8th day in a row with no measurable rain for Birmingham (our last measurable rain was on April 11, but the total was only 0.04″!), and the string will continue well into next week. For the weekend we are looking at mostly sunny mild days and clear cool nights. Highs will be generally in the 75 to 80 degree range.
NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS still shows our next significant chance of rain on Thursday, and we will continue to mention a good chance of showers and storms. That system will generate a chance of severe weather west of Alabama during the first half of the week, but it looks a little weaker by the time it arrives in Alabama and for now the threat of a major severe weather event doesn’t look all that great. But, we will surely take the rain that falls.
The latest GFS solution now shows a dry day on Friday (a week from today), followed by the next impulse which brings a phased upper trough through here on Saturday (April 28) with another very nice batch of rain and storms. Between the Thursday and Saturday systems, most communities have a great chance to receive over one inch of rain. The rain moves out Saturday night and for the moment Sunday (April 29) looks dry.
LONG RANGE: Interesting to note the GFS builds a long wave trough over the eastern U.S. around May 2 that would bring unseasonably cool air over much of the eastern half of the nation, if that happens to be correct.
