Okay, Central Alabama, you’ve got about five days of great spring weather ahead of you so enjoy it while you can. I’d like to see some rain, however, the next chance at any respectable rain won’t come until very late Wednesday and Thursday.
And this morning with temperatures in the 40s we are probably seeing the last cool-ish morning for several days with temperatures expected to climb into the 50s for morning lows. And highs will be nudging the 80-degree mark. So warm and dry is the forecast.
A robust weather system promises severe weather for the Central Plains especially today across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. That system moves out to the northeast and out of the picture by Monday while a new system drops in behind it on Tuesday. It is this system that brings some hope for some rain and perhaps a good soaking which we dearly need. The rainfall deficit at the Birmingham International Airport is approaching 12 inches for 2007. While there is a promise of rain the system will not bring much change in temperatures.
A new system right on the heels of the one on Thursday brings another chance of rain on Saturday. Of course, with the big race weekend at Talladega, they’d probably rather not have any rain. The latest GFS model run does move the rain out of the picture by Sunday with slightly cooler temperatures possible this time.
Out in voodoo country, the GFS brings good weather back to Alabama for the start of May. But there may be an early May cold snap for the Eastern US as the GFS develops a rather deep trough over the East Coast by Sunday, May 6th. The really cold air moves into the Mid-Atlantic States, however, it would bring substantially colder air to the Southeast, too. This is certainly a trend we need to watch as the model evolves.
I’ve got a busy weekend on tap. This afternoon I’ll be at the Alabaster Baptist Church Safety Fair talking to folks about severe weather safety. And tomorrow afternoon I’ll be discussing severe weather safety with a young man who wants to improve the safety plan at his school.
