I am very much like J.B. Elliott… I am finding myself already looking forward to October. Today will be another very warm day with the afternoon high in the mid to upper 80s for most Alabama communities. We might see a little deeper cumulus field this afternoon as low level moisture levels continue to edge upward, but we don’t expect to see much on radar today. Although we will bring in the risk of a few afternoon showers tomorrow and Friday, I am not totally convinced we are going to see all that much rain. The 00Z NAM extraction does show 0.26″ for Birmingham during the next 84 hours, but due to the scattered nature of the showers the rainfall distribution won’t be very even.
On the maps we have our upper level low still to the west, around Tulsa. That feature will continue to weaken as it drifts to the northeast. And, to the north, a nice cold front shows up from near St. Louis to Washington, DC. That front is drifting to the south, and both of those could help to bring a little increase in the number of scattered showers and thunderstorms to Alabama on Saturday. Still, no wash-out or all day kind of rain, but maybe a few neighborhoods will see a decent shower or two. Temperatures by the weekend will back down a bit, with highs dropping back into the 77 to 81 degree range, which is normal for early May in Alabama.
By Sunday the scattered showers and storms will thin out, and for early next week it looks like any showers or storms around here will be pretty isolated.
LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any major, organized rain event here through mid-May with the primary westerlies up around the Canadian border. The best we can do is the occasional chance of scattered afternoon showers and storms.

Today I will be speaking to the graduating seniors at Chelsea High School at their annual senior lunch at The Club. Boy, does time fly. When it comes to raising children, the days are long, but the years are short. One day your kids are in diapers; you blink and you are sitting at their high school graduation.
