At 2:00 this afternoon the dewpoint was only 35 at the Birmingham Airport; we won’t have too many of these kind of days before the long, hot summer arrives. Temperatures are also very comfortable; Birmingham’s 2:00 reading was only 72 degrees; combine that with the 35 degree dewpoint and you have a relative humidity of 25 percent. Very pleasant, indeed.
We will cool off nicely tonight; most spots will wind up somewhere between 45 and 50 degrees by daybreak tomorrow. Tomorrow will be another pleasant day, although a bit warmer with a high around 80 degrees.
INTERESTING ATLANTIC LOW: Scroll down and you can read J.B.’s notes on the hybrid low off the Atlantic coast, east of Jacksonville. While it is not a purely tropical system, it is bringing high wind and coastal flooding to a large part of the east coast of the U.S. Most likely, that feature will fizzle before having a chance to impact Alabama.
WE NEED SOME RAIN: Still no sign of any rain through mid-week, but enough moisture could return by Friday for a chance of widely scattered afternoon showers. Then, over the weekend, scattered showers and storms will be possible thanks to a stalled front near the Alabama/Tennessee state line. Much like last week, we are not talking about a wash-out or a big, widespread rain event, but a few lawns might see 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain from passing showers.
LONG RANGE: The 12Z GFS is coming in with a sharp trough over Central Canada and the Midwest U.S. around May 19, which drives a decent cold front down this way with a good chance of showers and storms. No need to buy into that right now; that is the first time I have seen it and it might not show up at all on future runs. That would be a good thing if it happened, however…
