A few spots across West Alabama yesterday, including Tuscaloosa, touched the 90 degree mark, and I see no reason for the weather to be any cooler today. If anything, it might be a degree or two warmer as summer-like warmth continues to build across the Deep South. Most spots will have a high today somewhere between 87 and 90, and once again the hope for afternoon showers is tiny. Quite frankly, most spots will stay dry tomorrow as well, although we have mentioned a risk of widely scattered afternoon showers north of Birmingham. Looks like any of those that form tomorrow will be over the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama.
THE WEEKEND: Still looks like Saturday will bring the best chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms to Alabama. About a one in three chance of any one spot getting wet, with rainfall mostly in the one-quarter to one-half range where the showers do form. And, of course, due to the scattered nature of the rain some spots won’t get enough rain to settle the dust. Then, on Sunday, drier air begins to creep into North Alabama, and it sure looks like most of the scattered showers by then will be over the southern half of the state. High temperatures over the weekend should be in the mid 80s.
NEXT WEEK: Dry air will cover Alabama on Monday and Tuesday, and both of those days now look rain-free. However, later in the week, the upper air pattern amplifies just a bit over North America, and there is some hope that a decent cold front will bring a better coverage of showers and thunderstorms by Thursday and Friday, May 17-18. That would be really nice.
ANDREA: Our sub-tropical storm east of Jacksonville is pretty lopsided with the convection well to the east of the center over the open Atlantic. Looks like this thing will bring very little rain to Georgia and Florida, and if anything it might even increase the number of wildfires due to the breeze on the west side of the circulation that is over land. It will just drift around over the next few days and weaken, not really causing any serious problems, although a tropical storm watch remains in effect for parts of the South Georgia and northern Florida coast.
