RIGHT NOW: Widely scattered showers and storms are forming over North and East Alabama. Up in the Tennessee Valley, pea to dime size hail was reported by a volunteer fireman in the Monrovia community in Madison County near Huntsville. With temperatures generally in the upper 80s, the air is relatively unstable with surface based CAPE values of 2500 j/kg over the northern third of Alabama. These storms will continue through the evening hours, but the rain certainly won’t be widespread.
TOMORROW: Unfortunately, the models are coming in drier for tomorrow. Still, we expect scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours as weak surface boundary approaches from the north. The 12Z NAM prints only 0.19″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is even drier with only 0.12″. Don’t get your hopes up for a big rain event.
SUNDAY: A surge of dry air moves into Alabama from the north, and Sunday should be a day and warm day with highs well into the 80s, but the humidity values should be lower.
NEXT WEEK: While Monday and Tuesday will remain dry with seasonal temperatures, we still have some hope for a decent cold front during the mid-week period. The 12Z GFS has delayed the arrival of the front until Thursday, but it still shows a healthy round showers and storms on the front, followed by refreshing change to cooler weather by the end of the week on Friday. The latest run suggests at least one-half inch of rain for much of the state Wednesday night and Thursday, followed by highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s by Friday. We might even see some 40s by early Friday morning of next week in the colder valleys.
