Some of us were lucky to see a good soaker yesterday afternoon and evening. I recorded a little over 6 tenths of an inch in my rain gauge and the yard is looking great this morning. Storm total precipitation estimates from the Birmingham NWS radar suggested that the area around Liberty Park may have seen over 3 inches and one Skywatcher in that area reported 2.49″ – quite a soaking.
The soupy, moist air mass remains in place across Central Alabama so it appears that showers will be scattered across the area again today and this evening. But the air will be drying out a bit as we head into Sunday and the first of next week, so we should be seeing a decrease in the scattered showers for the first of the week.
A cold front coming at us from the northwest at mid-week promises another round of scattered showers in the Wednesday-Thursday time frame. This weather feature also promises some cooler air with temperatures expected to slip back into the 70s for highs – that will be nice – along with a day or two of some lower humidity – and that is always nice.
The westerlies remain active well north of the Southeast US and Alabama, so outside of that mid-week system there are no other weather systems that are expected to impact Central Alabama. And the long range model guidance continues to keep the westerlies along the northern tier of the US, so we will continue to rely on scattered showers for any rainfall. Our deficit continues to be over a foot with the meager third of inch recorded at the Birmingham airport yesterday.
It will be a busy day today as I head out to the Buck Creek Festival in Helena. There is a lot of family fun and activities to be had with the duck race at 3 pm, music on TWO stages from 10 o’clock this morning until 10 tonight. Kids activities abound plus there will be crafters. I hope you’ll get a chance to come out – the event is free and much of the proceeds will benefit Safehouse of Shelby County, Helena Kiwanis and their Boundless Playground Project and the American Cancer Society. So come on out and have a great day and say hello. I’ll be somewhere close to the Storm Chaser or the stage announcing the acts.
