The NWS Birmingham says they don’t buy the 65 mph wind gust reported by the automated observing equipment at Montgomery’s Dannelly Field (main airport.)
They say airport personnel reported winds were no more than 15 mph.
Even though the radar showed a huge red blob over the field at the time of the report…it is apparently bogus.
Still, today’s stronger storms do have the potential to produce strong gusty winds.
The only really strong storm across the northern half of Alabama at 2:55 is southwest of Millport, extending from Lamar down into Pickens County, moving toward Macedonia and Ethelsville. Lots of lightning and very intense rainfall with this one. Likely some hail is falling west of Millport also.
The I-65 corridor is clear from Athens to south of Clanton. Still not even much in teh way of cumulus cloud development. We will see if that changes…
