TODAY: A band of strong storms is pushing through Alabama this morning. Nothing severe in the classic sense (large hail or damaging winds), but they are very loud with brief heavy rain. Some rain reports from our Skywatchers as of 5:15 a.m…
Bessemer 0.86″
Hueytown/Concord 0.69″
Coker 0.58″
Greystone Cove (North Shelby County) 0.51″
The heaviest rain will be south and east of Birmingham by 6:00… but some lingering showers are possible until mid-morning. We are fortunate the storms are coming through at a time of day when the air is relatively stable; SPC has a large slight risk of severe weather defined later today all the way from Tallahassee to Buffalo.
We turn noticeably cooler today… most places won’t get out of the 60s. The sun should begin to break through this afternoon as dry air takes over.
CHILLY NIGHTS: The stage is set for a couple of rather cold nights for April; most places will see a low in the 38 to 42 degree range both tomorrow and Saturday, but the colder valleys will drop into the low to mid 30s and have a chance of frost. We believe the coldest morning will be early Saturday with a clear sky and light wind. The cold temperatures shouldn’t be a widespread problem for growers, but just be aware that some of the colder pockets over the northern half of Alabama could be close to freezing early Saturday morning.
TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Fantastic weather for the weekend with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. Look for a high in the upper 60s tomorrow, low 70s Friday, and mid 70s Sunday.
DRY NEXT WEEK: A ridge of high pressure aloft will push the storm track north and west of Alabama next week, and it looks like the entire week will be dry. Highs will be generally in the upper 70s and low 80s. The GFS hints the next chance of rain will be around April 19-20.
