Showers yesterday were confined to East Central and West Central sections of Alabama, but the showers were pretty scattered so very few people got any rain. For today drier air will continue to filter into the state, so I expect to see plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. It will feel a little nicer with a bit lower humidity values. Dew points this morning were in the 50s across the Tennessee Valley and Tennessee, so even with those mid and upper 80s for afternoon highs, it will feel a little less hot.
Dry weather continues into the first of the upcoming week, but a cold front approaching Alabama from the northwest on Wednesday promises some rain for the area. The most likely time for rain will come from noon on Wednesday through about 6 am on Thursday. And the QPF projections are for one half to about one inch, and that looks pretty good. It appears likely that everyone should get some rain, but the very nature of showers means that the area won’t all get the same amounts.
The end of the week promises to be very, very nice. That cold front will bring some rain that will help to clear the air. That front will also bring some drier and cooler air for the end of the week. By Friday and Saturday we will see widespread temperatures in the lower and mid 50s for morning lows. In fact, there is the possiblity that some spots will see lows in the 40s. That will feel very nice when combined with lower humidity readings.
A week from today the weather will begin another warm up. So we need to enjoy those cool, drier days.
The longer range model projection has an interesting feature. The GFS promises another front around Wednesday, May 23rd. And then at the end of the cycle the GFS brings a low out of the western sections of the Caribbean – could this be another pre-season system that could become Barry? Well, I wouldn’t start placing any bets because I’m sure we’ll see this sytem disappear in future model runs. Unless, of course, the GFS really has hit upon something – which again I have doubts about. Sure makes for some interesting discussion, though.
I had a great day at the Buck Creek Festival in Helena yesterday. Lots of family fun and great music plus food too. Nice to see so many folks enjoy the event and the fine, dry weather. The rain from Friday evening provided just the right amount of water for Buck Creek so the duck race had enough water to get the ducks over the dam.
