We witnessed an amazing turn of events over the weekend and how Mother Nature can rise to the occasion and squelch forest fires.
We will not know until we get reports from all of the forestry experts, but I do not see how even a big fire could survive the extremely heavy rain that fell across of Florida and SE Georgia. Even in Central Georgia, Macon got over 1 inch.
Tropical Storm Barry never made it to the big time on the list of tropical storms, but that just goes to show you that you do not have to have a strong tropical storm or hurricane to get a whole bunch of rain. It was only a few years ago that a tropical depression brought some of the heaviest rain and worst flooding on record in the Houston area.
Barry was moving on up the Atlantic Seaboard late Sunday night. No longer tropical in nature and winds were down to 40 mph or less. Let’s take a look at some actual rain totals—all of it from Barry.
6.99 inches at West Palm Beach International Airport
6.03 at Melbourne
4.24 in the Tampa area
3.17 at Jacksonville Airport
8.00 at Mount Vernon, Georgia
5.91 in downtown Savannah
