The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Significant Weather Alert for Cullman, DeKalb, Jackson and Marshall Counties until 2:00 p.m. because of those thunderstorms. This is because of frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy downpours and some strong gusty winds. A Significant Weather Alert is short of an actual warning.
A weak front, which has pushed into extreme North Alabama, was triggering the storms. It is bringing in some slightly drier air to the area.
By 1:00 this afternoon, official temperatures had reached 100 at Birmingham Airport and as high as 103 in Montgomery. Anniston had been as high as 99, Auburn 100 and 101 in Tuscaloosa.
