The storm over northeastern Mississippi has weakened and is no longer a threat to be severe. It has broken into three parts and continues slowly north northeastward. It looks like it will stay to the west of Alabama. Some moderate rain did make it into northern Lamar and Marion Counties. A nice lightning show was reported around Hamilton and points west.
A new tornado watch has just been issued for eastern Arkansas, the Missouri Bootheel, western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. The activity over Arkansas is approaching the Mississippi River now. It will continue slowly eastward overnight.
Additional storms will continue to form in the area of warm, moist air over western Tennessee into northern Mississippi for the next several hours. Wind shear is strong and any storms that develop will have a good chance for rotation. Some of this could edge into western Alabama overnight.
As the trough edges ever so slowly eastward and a strong moisture flow continues into the Deep South tomorrow, heavy rain and severe storms will edge into Alabama tomorrow. The evening run of the GFS shows very heavy rain and the potential for severe storms into Alabama on Sunday and Sunday night.
We will be waiting to see the new Day One severe weather outlook from the SPC for Saturday around 1 a.m.
