I have been around awhile (quite awhile!) and what Memphis and Nashville has experienced in the last 36 hours or so just about tops the list of what I have seen.

Look at these 24 hour rain amounts ending at 7 this morning. Remember, these are only the 24 hour total. Much additional rain had already occurred in the previous six hours or so:

TENNESSEE
6.46 Jackson
5.60 Memphis (NWS Office)
9.96 Parsons
7.78 Lexington
11.94 Bemis
10.77 Franklin
10.09 New Johnsonville
9.91 Brentwood

NORTH MISSISSIPPI
6.72 Holly Springs
7.44 Sardis Dam
6.51 Ashland
5.68 Cornith

AND THESE NOTES
…Parts of the Memphis area received 15 or more inches in about 30 hours. Remember, very heavy rain was already in progress earlier than the 24 hour amounts listed above
…Munford, Tenn., 3.82 in one hour
…Atoka, Tenn., 3.82 in less than one hour
…Bartlett, Tenn., water up to windshields after only one hour of intense rain
…Brownsville, Tenn., 8.00 inches of rain in less than 6 hours. (Remember much of this was Saturday)
…Over 11 inches of rain between 3 am and 11 am at Bells, Tenn.
…At 8:38 Saturday morning, this terse message from Mason in Tipton County: “Countywide severe flooding overwhelming emergency services. Numerous cars completely submerged. Most roads impassable.”
