THIS AFTERNOON: We are having a hard time reaching the 90 degree mark… I think the moist soil is the reason; some solar energy has to go toward evaporating the soil moisture, which takes away from the energy available to heat the ground, which in turn heats the air. Tuscaloosa was at 89 degrees at 3:00… Birmingham was reporting 87. One way or another another very warm day for early May in Alabama.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Not much change tomorrow. Lot of sunshine with a high in the 88 to 91 degree range. But, a cold front is due in here early Saturday morning, and we will continue to mention the risk of isolated showers. The best chance of a shower will come from 2:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Saturday, and rain should be very light and spotty. Many communities will stay dry; the main impact of the front will be to bring in cooler air for the weekend. We are projecting highs in the mid 70s Saturday… the sky will become sunny during the day with a cool north breeze of 10 to 20 mph. Sunday will be dry and even cooler; we will begin the day with lows in the 48 to 51 degree range, followed by a high in the low 70s Sunday afternoon. All in all a fine, comfortable weekend.
NEXT WEEK: The old front will move northward Sunday night, and could squeeze out a few showers, but rain once again will be very light and spotty. We rise back into the 80s Monday with a partly sunny sky, and humidity levels will increase as well. The week looks generally dry with highs in the 80s; the main rain producing systems will stay north and west of Alabama as an upper ridge holds across the Southeast U.S.
THE LAND OF VOODOO: Still no sign of any major severe weather or heavy rain issue through late May… see the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas. Just maybe the worst of the 2010 spring tornado season is behind us now.
