Yesterday was summer and today will be much cooler and more Spring-ish! All of this thanks to a cold front moving through Central Alabama this Saturday morning. The front was evident on the current surface map by a wind shift plus a nice drop in temperature of about 7 to 10 degrees. The front was also nicely seen on the early morning visible satellite imagery with clearing skies behind the front and clouds along and ahead of the front. The front should continue to advance eastward today clearing much of Alabama by late this afternoon. Some showers along with isolated thunderstorms were occurring in Central Mississippi – Jackson NWS office had also issued a warning with at least one of those storms.
The front heads east bringing us a great Mother’s Day tomorrow. We’re going to see lows dip back into the 40s with the afternoon high in the upper 60s and lower 70s – a beautiful day to honor our mothers.
The GFS 06Z run suggests a warm front or small disturbance on Monday that could bring an isolated shower to the area, but I think most of us stay dry. The upper ridge builds in much stronger on Tuesday keeping us dry and allowing us to warm up back into the 80s for highs. The ridge pumps up through mid and late week as a strong trough takes hold over the western US. That trough kicks out across the Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday which could nudge the frontal boundary into the Southeast. This would set the stage for scattered showers in Alabama which we stay reasonably warm.
Looking out into voodoo, the GFS makes a rather sudden and dramatic change building an Omega block over the western US and Canada. We all know that long range forecasts, ie, voodoo country, is likely to change, but the rapid change in building this Omega blocking pattern seems somewhat unnatural to me, so I have very little faith in the long range view.
