VERY WARM, VERY HUMID: We should see a high today in the 87 to 90 degree range with a partly sunny, hazy sky. The warm air aloft associated with the upper ridge will keep us dry, with rain and storms well to the west and north. It will feel more like June or July today.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge will break down a bit, and a surface front will drift down this way from the north, and stall out over North Alabama. This means we will need to bring in the chance of scattered showers and storms for about the northern half of the state. As usual, the most numerous ones will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower as the surface front will provide some low level convergence. The chance of any one spot getting a shower or storm each day is about one in three, and highs will be generally in the mid 80s over the weekend. No total wash out, but no doubt a rain delay is very possible if you have an outdoor event going on, including the Regions Charity Golf Classic at Ross Bridge.

NEXT WEEK: A short wave will bring an increase in the number of showers and storms Monday, and that should be the day with the best coverage of rain. Then, the latest GFS shows drier air moving into the state Tuesday. The rest of the week will be warm and dry as the ridge rebuilds. Next week won’t be quite as warm, with a high around the 80 degree mark most days, which is at or just below average values for mid to late May.

LONG RANGE: The core of the westerlies will remain up on the Canadian border, so the last 10 days of May looks rather uneventful; see the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
